How to Use Ghee Every Day: 25 Practical Ways to Add It to Your Life
August 25, 2026
Most people drizzle ghee on dal and call it done. But Ayurveda has 25+ ways to use ghee daily — in your food, on your skin, and in your morning ritual.
Why Make Ghee a Daily Habit?
Occasional ghee gives occasional benefits. Daily, consistent use — in appropriate quantities — is where transformative effects manifest. Ayurveda makes ghee a cornerstone of dinacharya (daily wellness routine). Therapeutic quantity: 1–2 teaspoons (5–10g) per day.
Morning Ritual
- 1. Warm water with ghee (Snehapana): 1 tsp in warm water on empty stomach. Lubricates GI tract, activates Agni, promotes bowel regularity, detoxifies the colon. Wait 30 minutes before eating.
- 2. Nasya (nasal application): 2 drops warm ghee in each nostril. Lubricates passages, prevents dryness, supports mental clarity — especially valuable in winter and air-conditioned environments.
- 3. Navel application (Nabhi Chikitsa): A few drops on the navel, massage gently in circles. Traditional support for gut health, skin health, and emotional balance via the vagus nerve.
- 4. Ghee in coffee or chai: 1 tsp blended in. Slows caffeine absorption for sustained energy without cortisol spike and crash. Rooted in Tibetan butter tea tradition.
- 5. Ghee on toast: Replace butter with ghee — nutty, richer, provides butyrate instead of water weight.
- 6. Ghee in oatmeal/daliya: 1 tsp stirred in — improves fat-soluble nutrient absorption from any fruit or nuts added, and slows glucose release.
In Your Meals
- 7. Tadka on dal: The most culturally irreplaceable use — cumin, mustard, curry leaves bloom in ghee's aromatic fat matrix.
- 8. Ghee on rice: Reduces glycaemic index by slowing starch digestion. Traditional practice confirmed by nutrition science.
- 9. Ghee on roti/paratha: Reduces glycaemic impact; adds fat-soluble vitamins to an otherwise fat-free carbohydrate.
- 10. Sautéing vegetables: Beta-carotene in carrots and fat-soluble vitamins in leafy greens absorb into your system only in the presence of fat.
- 11. Khichdi with ghee: Ayurveda's complete healing food — rice + moong dal + ghee. The ghee makes every nutrient bioavailable.
- 12. Roasting vegetables: Toss in melted ghee before roasting at 200°C. Better caramelisation, richer flavour, full nutrient bioavailability.
- 13. Baking: Replace butter 1:1. Crispier exterior, richer flavour. Exceptional in halwa, burfi, ladoos.
For Skin and Hair
- 14. Night moisturiser for dry skin: A tiny amount on dry patches before bed. Vitamins A and E repair skin from within.
- 15. Lip balm: A small amount on chapped lips — as effective as commercial balm, without petroleum ingredients.
- 16. Hair mask: Warm 2 tbsp ghee, apply to scalp and hair length, leave 1 hour before shampooing. Deeply conditions without synthetic silicones.
- 17. Minor burn and wound healing: Butyric acid has antimicrobial properties; the fat creates a protective barrier supporting healing.
For Children and Elderly
- 18. Baby massage: Warm ghee for infant massage — transdermal vitamin absorption and neuromuscular development support.
- 19. Ghee in baby food (6 months+): ¼ tsp in purees/khichdi — caloric density and fat-soluble vitamin absorption.
- 20. Warm milk with ghee at bedtime (elderly): 1 tsp in warm milk — joint lubrication, constipation relief, sleep support via tryptophan and fat combination.
Advanced Ayurvedic Practices
- 21. Medicated ghee (Ghrita preparations): Ghee infused with Brahmi (brain), Ashwagandha (stress), or Shatavari (hormones). Amplifies both the herb and ghee. Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner.
- 22. Ghee with jaggery: A complete energy food — iron, minerals, and healthy fat combined. Traditional sweet that nourishes deeply.
- 23. Ghee on the tongue (Jihva Lepa): After tongue scraping — a smear of ghee before breakfast. Traditional support for oral health and nerve stimulation.
- 24. Popcorn in ghee: Pop kernels in ghee at medium-high heat. Exceptional flavour, no risk of toxic fat breakdown even at popping temperatures.
- 25. Ghee in soups and bone broth: 1 tsp in warm soup adds satiety, improves fat-soluble nutrient absorption, and gives body to the broth.
