How to Read a Ghee Label: FSSAI Licence, Batch Number and More
By Thaaro Foods · 8 October 2026
The label is the quickest way to judge a jar of ghee. What it must show in India, and what each line tells you before you buy.
Before you buy any jar of ghee, in a shop or online, turn it around. Packaged food in India must carry certain details, and together they tell you who made it and when.
What the label must show
- Name of the product: for example cow ghee or buffalo ghee.
- FSSAI logo and licence number: a 14-digit number. You can check it on the FSSAI's public licence search.
- Net quantity: in ml, litres or grams.
- Maximum retail price (MRP): inclusive of all taxes.
- Date of manufacture or packing, and best before: how long it keeps.
- Batch or lot number: so the maker can trace the jar.
- Name and address of the maker or packer, and customer care details.
- Veg symbol: the green dot.
Buying online
Online shops in India must show the same details on the product page: net quantity, MRP, maker's name and address, country of origin and customer care. On every Thaaro product page they are under Product information.
Beyond the label
- How it is made: bilona ghee from curd, or ghee from cream.
- Lab reports: some makers publish test reports. Thaaro publishes lab reports by batch, and you can look up the batch on your jar.
- Aroma and taste: good ghee smells nutty and fresh.
