Buying Ghee for a Wedding, Bhandara or Big Family Function

By Thaaro Foods · 8 October 2026

Halwa for a hundred, puris for a bhandara, laddoos for a wedding: how to work out how much ghee you need, and how to buy and keep it.

In a Rajasthani wedding or a village bhandara, ghee is not an ingredient you measure by the spoon. It goes into the halwa, the laddoos, the puris, the dal and the baati. Here is how to plan it without running short or buying far too much.

Work it out from your recipes

Every family and every halwai cooks differently, so the best guide is your own recipe:

  1. For each dish, write down how much ghee one batch uses and how many people one batch serves.
  2. Divide the number of guests by the people per batch, and multiply by the ghee per batch.
  3. Add the dishes together and keep about a tenth extra for tadka, greasing and second helpings.

An example: if your atta halwa uses 1 cup of ghee (about 200 g) for 8 servings, halwa for 100 guests needs about 13 batches: roughly 2.5 kg of ghee. Our atta halwa recipe and dal baati churma recipe give the amounts for a family, to scale up.

Which ghee for which dish

  • Buffalo ghee: the traditional choice for halwa, laddoo, churma and baati. It is richer, white, and sets thick.
  • A2 cow ghee: lighter and nutty, lovely on dal, rice and rotis, and for the pooja.
  • Kachi ghani mustard oil: for frying pakoras and for sabzi, where many families prefer it to ghee. See our mustard oil guide.

Bulk packs

For large functions, larger packs cost less per ml and mean fewer jars to open. Thaaro's bilona buffalo ghee comes in sizes up to a 5 L dolchi; see every size on the buffalo ghee page. For more than you see in stock, or for a delivery date, write to us before you order.

Order in good time

We dispatch within 1–2 business days and delivery usually takes 3–7 business days, so order at least two weeks before the function. Orders of ₹799 and above ship free.

Keeping it in the kitchen

  • Keep unopened packs in a cool, dry place out of the sun.
  • Open one pack at a time and use a dry ladle: water is what spoils ghee.
  • Ghee left over keeps well for everyday cooking; see how to store ghee.

Questions

How much ghee do I need for 100 people?

It depends on the menu. Take the ghee one batch of each dish uses, scale it to 100 guests and add about a tenth extra. For example, halwa at 200 g of ghee per 8 servings needs about 2.5 kg for 100.

Which ghee is best for halwa and laddoo in bulk?

Buffalo ghee is the traditional choice for sweets, halwa and churma for its richness. A2 cow ghee is lighter and suits dal, rice and pooja.

How early should I order ghee for a function?

At least two weeks before. We dispatch within 1–2 business days and delivery usually takes 3–7 business days.
